Welcome to the first NEWSLETTER from THE BRAS D'OR STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY. It is our plan that society members will receive two NEWSLETTERS a year. We want to keep you informed of society activities as well as issues which concern the protection and conservation of the Bras d'Or Lake and its watershed. As you are aware, the Bras d'Or Stewardship Society is a new entity. At the writing of this NEWSLETTER, there are just under 100 paid members.

A year ago there were none! To be a successful organization a broad based membership is required to carry out the aims and goals of the society. Increasing membership is a goal. A questionnaire is included to assess your concerns and opinions regarding important environmental issues. We ask that you fill this out and return it to the Board. A self-addressed envelop is provided for your convenience. Your input is essential towards helping us address critical stewardship issues.

Your responses will assist the SOCIETY in charting future actions. It is also hoped that you will feel free to contribute to future NEWSLETTERS. We are interested in ideas, critical issues, and ways of creating a better understanding of the requirements to advocate responsible stewardship within the confines of the Bras d'Or watershed.

Creating this first NEWSLETTER is a bit like shooting unknown rapids. The challenge is great, the path uncertain, but if we do not start paddling we will not get there. Indeed, the first NEWSLETTER of THE BRAS D'OR STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY is a celebration of the society's first six months of life. To all who have joined to date, many thanks for your support.

Should someone ask what THE BRAS D'OR STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY is all about, tell them that it is an advocacy organization promoting the protection, conservation and restoration of the Bras d' OR Lake and its watershed. Nothing, more, nothing less.

The first annual General Meeting of the Bras d'Or Stewardship Society will be held on March 21, 1998. Meeting time is 2:00 p.m. Location is at the Bell Museum. Members of the Society are encouraged to attend!
